Current or recent clients include the Public Health and Childhood Obesity teams at the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the Office of Smoking and Health at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the Health Impact Project of the Pew Charitable Trusts. Assignments have included issue analysis, program development and evaluation, review of funding proposals, training and technical assistance.

Senior Program Consultant

I worked both internally with foundation staff on program development and evaluation, as well as externally, providing technical assistance to foundation grantees around the country. My work with the foundation focused on public health policy advocacy at the state, local and tribal levels.

Director of Advocacy, Northwest Division (AK, MT, OR, WA)

I supervised a staff of nine and managed contracts with several lobbyists and consultants, all working to achieve ACS’s public policy objectives in four states. I developed and managed the budget for the advocacy department, and was primarily responsible for strategic planning and priority setting. I was initially hired by ACS in 6/98 as the advocacy manager in Oregon, and following a four state merger was promoted to manage the regional advocacy department in 11/99.

I conducted site visits, witness interviews, and file reviews, and prepared reports including findings and conclusions, pursuant to each agency’s statutory dispute resolution procedures.

I managed a small, general practice law firm and represented clients in the areas of family, disability and elder law. I provided legal services to several state agencies, including the Division of Elderly and Adult Services, the Department of Education, and the Division of Vocational Rehabilitation.

Managing Attorney

I managed one of five branch offices of a statewide public interest law firm representing low income and elderly clients in a range of civil matters. I was initially hired as a staff attorney and promoted to managing attorney in 7/87.

Visiting Instructor of Legal Writing

I taught a required course in legal research, writing and oral advocacy to sixty first-year law students.
